EAI has recently increased in importance because, traditionally, enterprise computing often takes the form of "islands of automation". Increasingly, to manage system complexity and realise productivity savings from IT investment, an organisation needs to share data between its different systems, which may be from different vendors, using different databases, written in different languages, etc. Moreover, EAI is not just about sharing data between applications; it also focuses on sharing business data and business processes.
